Martha’s Vineyard is an island 3.5 miles off the coast of Massachusetts. A summer paradise with beautiful beaches, villages, and site seeing.
It is made up of six towns, Tisbury, West Tisbury, Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, Chilmark, Aquinnah formally known as Gay Head.
Tisbury – Is the primary port for cargo and passengers. The primary port for year round cargo and passenger ferry entry is in the village of Vineyard Haven. Many visiting boat owners come to the island and dock there boats in Vineyard Haven mariner. Points of interest include; Owen Park and Legion Field, Lake Tashmoo, Tashmoo Overlook, Vineyard Haven Harbor, West Chop Lighthouse.
Oak Bluffs – This town is where the famous Ginger Bread cottages reside, lots of village shops, restaurants, and active nightlife. It is also known as a “wet town” that serves alcohol. Points of interest include Oak Bluffs Harbor, Flying Horse Carousel oldest platform Carousel in the United States, Ocean Park, Hiawatha Park, and Viera Park, Farm Neck Golf Course, State Beach and the Inkwell beach Tall Timbers Gingerbread House.
Edgartown – Has the largest population and is known as a whaling town. It is on of the wet towns. Points of interest include Edgartown Harbor, Edgartown Lighthouse, Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, South Beach, Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge.
West Tisbury – Is the agricultural center for Martha’s Vineyard, and hosts the MV Agricultural Fair in late August each year. Points of interest include Cedar Tree Neck Sanctuary, Mayhew Chapel, Grange Hall, Lambert’s Cove and beach.
Chilmark – Has the hilliest terrain, includes the fishing village of Menemsha. Points of interest include Menemsha Harbor sunset-watching, Menemsha Pond great for sailing or kayaking, Squid Row, Lucy Vincent Beach and Menemsha Hills Reservation.
Aquinnah – The Wampanoag Indian tribe has been here for many centuries. Formally known as Gay head, site seeking enthusiast and hikes seek out Gay Head Cliffs. Points of interest include Gay Head cliffs, Gay Head Lighthouse and Lobsterville.
Most popular beaches – Cape Pogue, The Inkwell, Lambert’s Cove Beach, Lobsterville Town Beach, Lucy Vincent Beach, South Beach at Katama, State Beach, and Harthaven beach.
There are several passenger ferries, Steamship Authority out of Woods Hole and Hyannis, The Island Queen out of Falmouth, Hy-line Cruises from Hyannis, New Bedford to Martha’s Vineyard Express Ferry, Rhode Island – Vineyard Fast Ferry.
There are three Car and passenger ferries, all run by Steamship Authority - Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven; Woods Hole to Oak Bluff; Hyannis to Oak Bluffs
Once there many tourists travel on the island by the VTA Vineyard Transit Authority bus line; buses take passengers between all the towns.
