Plum Island is divided between four cities and towns: Newburyport, Newbury, Rowley and Ipswich.

There is plenty of fishing off the beaches and Merrimack River. The anglers will catch strippers and blues during the summer months. If you want to fish by boat then catch an off-shore excursion on a charter boat or party boat.

- Sandy Point State Park – on the southern tip is a and a great place to swim. Breading spot for endangered Piping Plover. In the winter you may catch a rare Snowy Owl.
- Parker River National Wildlife Refuge – Wildlife including more than 300 species of birds and additional species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and plants.
- Hellcat Interpretive Trail – 1.4 miles trail with freshwater marsh, shrub, pools, dune, and maritime woodland habitats.
- Stage Island Pool – Is an excellent location for bird watchers and waterfowl. A population of Ruddy Ducks nests here.
- Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Joppa Flats – Education Center – Many species of birds that utilize the area’s salt marshes, mudflats, rivers, bays, and coastal waters.
- Plum Island Lighthouse – Northern tip of Plum Island.
- Cushing House Museum – Collections from the Historical Society of Old Newbury.
- Custom House Maritime Museum – An educational center, research facility, and maritime heritage.
- Coffin House Museum – Domestic life in rural New England over three centuries. Contains family’s furnishings that began as a simple home in the post-medieval style, where Tristam Coffin and his family lived.
